Apex Type Foundry

Informations

Apex is an independent type foundry based in Paris, founded and run by Alex Chavot. Alex is a graphic and type designer whose practice revolves around letterforms and printed matter—books, identities, magazines, signage and more. Since 2012, he has been exploring and shaping alphabets across commissioned and self-initiated projects, always treating type as a driving force rather than a finishing touch.

Apex grew naturally from this practice: years of designing type for real-world projects led to a catalogue of characters ready to be shared. In 2020, Apex became a dedicated platform to browse, try and license these fonts with ease.

Our approach is hands-on and iterative. Graphic design informs type design, and type design feeds back into graphic work—each project providing a space to test, refine and push forms further. The result: contemporary, reliable, and characterful typefaces, rooted in typographic history but built for today.

Alongside the retail library, Apex also creates custom typefaces, logotypes and lettering for clients seeking tailored typographic solutions.

Licenses

Our licensing model follows a simple idea shared by a new generation of foundries: the value of a typeface grows with the size and reach of the company using it. Licenses are purchased by the end client—the organisation commissioning the work and ultimately benefiting from the fonts. The designer or studio is not the license owner.

Designers can explore our fonts freely with trial versions—including pitches, proposals, and internal mockups. Once a project is approved, the client purchases the license, and creatives gain production rights through our Third-Party option.

Straightforward, fair, and built for real-world contemporary workflows.

First, pick the company size (total number of employees—not number of individuals using the font(s)). Then, choose the license type(s) covering all your needs.

Desktop + Print + Social Offline outputs & socials
otf
ttf

Covers the installation of the font(s) on all designated devices to create printed and digital assets such as documents, merchandise, signage, portfolios and similar deliverables for one company.

Web Websites, Web apps & Digital Advertising
woff2

Using the font(s) on one web domain, without limit in regard to the amount of web traffic. An additional, separate web license needs to be obtained for using the font(s) on another domain. Only the provided WOFF2 files can be used, not desktop fonts like OTF.

App + Game Mobile, Tablet, or any remote device application
otf
ttf

This is for embedding the font(s) into one digital product, such as a mobile/desktop/web app or a game. Using the font(s) for multiple apps or games requires the purchase of additional licenses.

Video Broadcast & streaming
otf
ttf

Covers the use of fonts in broadcast contexts: feature films, TV series, streaming platforms, cinema and television advertising. Day-to-day motion work and social media content—reels, stories, animated posts—are covered by the “Desktop + Print + Social” license and do not require this upgrade.

Logo + Wordmark To use the font in a logotype or wordmark
otf
ttf

This license allows the font to be used to create a logotype or wordmark for a single company. It grants you the right to convert the font to outlines and edit them in a design software.

If the offered formats and/or license types are not sufficient, license extensions may be required. For instance, Unlimited Licenses can be arranged, which bundle all available licenses for a one-time-fee, without restrictions or company size limit. Please email us for more information.

Please note that by purchasing, downloading or installing our fonts you automatically agree to our End User License Agreement (EULA).

Discounts

At the core of our offer, every additional font style comes at a discounted price. We also offer a Family discount: once you select at least four styles, you get the full family for a fraction of the price. Additionally, each extra license (e.g., Web + Video) automatically gives you a 10% discount!

We want to make our fonts accessible to everyone—especially to those who matter most to us and have a positive impact on the world. That’s why non-profits, students and educators can also benefit from special discounts.

Student / Educational Discount
-50%

We believe in supporting the next generation of designers—and we understand the financial reality of student life in these uncertain times. If you’re currently enrolled in a design, art, or creative program, you’re eligible for a 50% student discount on all our fonts. You’re free to use the fonts for personal projects throughout your studies. After graduation, you can continue to use them for self-initiated work. If you’re working for a client, however, the client must purchase their own license based on the size of their company. Educators are also welcome to get in touch for classroom licensing and special deals tailored to teaching environments.

Non-Profit Discount
-25%

We offer our fonts at a reduced price of 25% to non-profits, environmental protection operations and cultural institutions (i.e., a museum, library, art gallery, artist, photographer, musician, independent record label, independent publisher, or independent fashion label). If your organization is eligible for the discount, choose the Non-Profit Discount during checkout.

Please note that we may—at any time—request verification of your status (valid student ID, enrollment confirmation, non-profit registration documents…).

Trials

Our free Trial Fonts Package (.zip) give you access to the full extent of Apex catalog in just one click. We know how important it is for designers and their clients to be able to thoroughly test and evaluate typefaces before purchase. That’s why we chose to provide fully functional fonts (full character set, kerning, OpenType features…). So please don’t betray our trust.

Trial Fonts are only intended for personal testing purposes. You can play around and mock up your print, web or app designs and get your client’s approval before they purchase the right license. Any uses in published (i.e., social media) or commercial works are strictly prohibited.

FAQ

Still got questions? No problem! Our FAQ probably covers everything you should know about Apex and working with our fonts. But if you don’t find what you are looking for, please feel free to drop us a line. We’ll be happy to connect and help out!

Licensing
What is a font license?

A font license is a legal agreement that grants you the right to use a typeface in specific ways. When you purchase a font from Apex, you’re not buying the font itself—you’re buying permission to use it under the terms we’ve outlined in our EULA. It’s a one-time fee for perpetual use; no subscriptions, no renewals.

Who should purchase the license?

The license should be purchased by the end client—the individual, company or organization that will ultimately benefit from the use of the fonts. If you’re a designer working for a client, the license belongs to them, not to your studio. For the designer to be covered, the client must select the “Shared with third parties” option at checkout. Without it, the designer is not authorized to use the fonts on the client’s behalf.

How do you determine the license price?

Our pricing is based on the total number of people working for the licensing company —not the size of the design agency they hire, not the number of people using the fonts day-to-day. The idea is simple: the value a typeface brings to a company grows with that company’s size and reach. Fair and square.

Are licenses perpetual?

Yes. All licenses are perpetual. You pay once and you can use the fonts indefinitely, within the scope of the license you purchased. That said, if the license owner’s company grows beyond the size tier at the time of purchase, the license will need to be upgraded accordingly. Drop us a line at info@apextypefoundry.com and we’ll sort it out with you.

Can I use an Apex font to design a logo or wordmark?

Yes. Our “Logo + Wordmark” license covers the creation of a logo or wordmark for a single company. It includes the right to convert letterforms to outlines and edit them as vectors in your design software. If you’d like to create logos for multiple clients, each client will need their own license.

Can I share the font files with my printer, developer, or another agency?

Yes, but only if the client has purchased the “Shared with third parties” option at checkout. Once that’s in place, the font files may be passed along to any contractor (printer, developer, motion designer…) working on the project. They may only use the fonts in the context of that specific project, and for no other purpose.

Does each client need their own license?

Yes. If you’re a designer working across multiple clients, each of those clients needs to purchase their own license. A single license covers only one company/brand.

Can I modify the fonts?

No. Decompiling, reverse-engineering, or modifying the font files is not permitted under any circumstances. That said, you’re always free to convert text to outlines within your design software and edit those vector shapes as you see fit.

Can I use Apex fonts for social media content (including reels and animated stories)?

Yes. The “Desktop + Print + Social” license covers all content produced for social media, including static posts, stories, reels, and motion design assets published on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube. You don’t need a “Video” license for that kind of work. The “Video” license is reserved for broadcast contexts: feature films, TV series, streaming platforms, cinema and television advertising. If your project ends up on a screen in a theatre or on a major streaming platform, that’s when the “Video” license applies.

Purchase
How do I buy a font?

You can browse our typefaces and click on any “Buy” button whenever you’re ready. Then select if you purchase it for yourself or for a client, and specify the size of the license owner. Finally, you only have to choose the appropriate license type(s) and select the styles you need (or fall for a full family) and head to checkout. Payment is processed securely online. You’ll receive a confirmation email with your invoice and a download link right away.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept all major credit and debit cards via Stripe, as well as PayPal. Both options are secure and you’ll receive a payment confirmation and invoice immediately after checkout.

Do you offer refunds?

Because font files are delivered digitally and instantly, we generally don’t offer refunds once a purchase has been downloaded. If something went wrong technically or you have a genuine concern, reach out to us and we’ll do our best to help.

How are taxes handled?

Apex Type Foundry operates under the French micro-BNC regime (non-commercial freelance). As such, no VAT is applied to any of our sales—regardless of where you’re based. The price you see is the price you pay, with no tax added at checkout.

Discounts
Do you offer discounts?

Yes—a few. Every additional style within a family is automatically discounted. If you select four or more styles, you unlock our Family discount. We also offer reduced pricing for students and non-profits (see below).

Do you offer a student discount?

Yes—students currently enrolled in a design, art, or creative program get 50 % off all our fonts. You’re free to use the fonts for personal projects throughout your studies and beyond (for self-initiated work). If you take on a client project after graduating, your client will need to purchase their own license based on the size of their company. Educators are also welcome to get in touch for classroom licensing and special deals tailored to teaching environments.

Do you offer discounts for non-profits and cultural institutions?

Yes. Non-profits, environmental organizations, museums, libraries, galleries, independent publishers, and similar cultural institutions benefit from a 25 % discount. Select the “Non-profit Discount” option during checkout, and note that we may request documentation to verify your status.

Trial Fonts
Can I try the fonts before buying?

Absolutely. Download our free “Trial Fonts Package” to get access to our full catalogue in one go—with complete character sets, kerning, and OpenType features. You can test them in your layouts, mock up real projects, and share options with your clients before anyone spends a cent. We trust you with that.

What can I do with trial fonts?

Trial fonts are for evaluation only—internal testing, mockups and client pitches. They can’t be used in published or commercial work. If a project gets the green light, the client purchases the proper license and you’ll receive the production-grade files.

Download & Delivery
How do I receive my fonts after purchase?

Right after checkout, you’ll receive an email with two secure download links: one for the fonts, one for your invoice. If something doesn’t arrive, please check your spam folder first, then get in touch.

Can I re-download my fonts later?

Yes. You can access your purchase history and re-download your fonts and invoices from your personal account at any time. Just make sure to hold on to your login details.

What file formats are included?

Web licenses come with WOFF2 files. All other licenses include OTF files. For typefaces that offer a variable font, a TTF variable file is included as a free bonus when you purchase the full family.

Technical Details
What software can I use with your fonts?

Our desktop fonts work with any standard design software: Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Figma (with a Desktop license), Affinity, and most other applications that accept system fonts on macOS or Windows.

Do your fonts include OpenType features?

Yes. All of our typefaces include a wide range of OpenType features—alternates, ligatures, small caps, multiple figure styles, and more depending on the family. Check each typeface’s page and specimen for further details on what’s available.

What if I encounter a bug or a rendering issue?

We put a lot of care into making our fonts as reliable as possible, and they should work well in the vast majority of contexts. That said, some applications handle font rendering in their own way and may bypass certain internal settings—so we can’t guarantee perfect results across every piece of software out there. But we’re human after all, so if you spot something that looks wrong, please let us know at info@apextypefoundry.com. We will do our best to try to fix any genuine issue.

Do you offer variable fonts?

Some of our typefaces are available as variable fonts. Where available, the variable TTF is included as a free bonus when purchasing the full family—it is not available with individual style purchases. Check each typeface’s page to see if a variable version exists.

Custom Type
Do you offer custom typeface design?

Yes. We work with agencies, studios, and brands of all sizes—from logotype refinements to full bespoke typeface design. Each custom project is handled as a close collaboration: we take the time to understand your brief, your brand, and your constraints before a single letter is drawn. Head to our Custom page for more informations and case studies, and don’t hesitate to get in touch with us directly at info@apextypefoundry.com.

Can I commission an adaptation of an existing Apex typeface?

Yes, in some cases. Depending on the typeface and the scope of modifications needed, we can discuss customizing an existing design—adding weights, extending the character set or only tweaking a few letters, adjusting proportions, etc. Get in touch and we’ll explore what’s possible.

What rights do I get over a custom typeface?

That depends on what we agree to at the start of the project. We’ll be clear about ownership, exclusivity, and usage rights upfront, before any work begins.
